Brooklyn-based nonprofit SaveArtSpace is pleased to present “SaveArtSpace x Superchief Gallery: MIAMI” a cross-media gallery and public art exhibition curated by SaveArtSpace & Superchief Gallery. The exhibiting artists are Maxine Helfman, Parker Day, Katie Alexander, Patricia Basiliades Lovay, and Jose Mertz.

During the week of December 3rd, SaveArtSpace will launch public art installations for each selected work on bus stop ad spaces throughout Miami. A pop-up exhibition will mount at Superchief Gallery, 3100 NW 7th Ave, Miami, on Sunday December 9th, with a reception set for 4pm. 

Participating Organizations

SaveArtSpace transforms advertisement space into public art by and for the local community. Providing artists opportunities to display their work in the public space. Creating an urban gallery experience, we aim to affect and inspire and new generation of artists. Since 2015, SaveArtSpace has exhibited 116 artists on 136 advertising spaces - in nine major US cities.

Superchief Gallery is an independent artist-run gallery with permanent large scale warehouse locations in New York and Downtown Los Angeles. We have been written about in LA Weekly, the Village Voice, Juxtapoz Magazine, The New Yorker, Interview Magazine, Vice, Italian Vogue and many others. Superchief has a history of supporting artists from disparate scenes and collectives, enabling them to participate in the larger community. As a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary platform, Superchief Gallery is an extension of the cultural landscape in its most raw and honest form.

Maxine Helfman

Maxine Helfman

Location: NW 36th St & NW 9th Ave, Miami, Fl

Maxine Helfman (American, B. 1953) is a self taught photographer whose work focuses on the intersection of history and contemporary issues of race and identity. Her portraits, inspired by paintings are reminiscent of the works of Dutch Masters, while her narrative work is inspired by works of fiction. Helfman's photographs have been exhibited internationally, featured by CNN, Telegraph UK, British Journal of Photography and in the permanent collections of the Museum of Fine Art, Houston, The Santa Barbara Museum of Art and the Tweed Museum.

Katie Alexander Mujer Moderna

Katie Alexander Mujer Moderna

Location: NW 29th St & 5th Ave, Miami, Fl

Miami-based artist, Katie Alexander, is best known for her work with collages. Inspired by feminism, current events, and social justice, Katie’s work is subtle and thought provoking. With a background in graphic design and photography, Katie’s distinct use of negative space, bold colors, and composition shine through in her collages.

Patricia Basiliades Lovay State of Enlightenment

Patricia Basiliades Lovay State of Enlightenment

Location: NW 36th & NW 11th Ct, Miami, Fl

Born in Rosario, Argentina, Patricia Basiliades Lovay studied Fine Arts at The National University in Rosario. She was one of the Co-Founders of the Argentine art groups SIGNO (1988) and RoZarte (1989), which achieved recognition for being among the first groups emerging during the nascent New Argentinean democracy. Also was honored to have participated in the First Biennale in Rosario, Argentina (1989).

She then went on to teach Art for over 10 years in preschools and private art ateliers and moved to Miami in 1990 to create her own line of hand painted clothing AGUA ARTWEAR. Drawing has always been her passion as well as his primary medium of expression. She is currently mainly focused on illustration with mixed media. Patricia is an artist who uses reality and creativity capturing people’s feelings, reflecting them in emotionally charged drawings.

Parker Day The Female Gaze

Parker Day The Female Gaze

Parker Day was born in San Jose, California in 1984. She studied photography at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, California from 2002 until 2005. Day has exhibited in the US and abroad including solo shows at Superchief Gallery in both Los Angeles and New York, and Peyer Fine Art in Zurich, Switzerland. Group shows she’s participated in include the FRONT Triennial in Cleveland, Spring/Break Art Show in New York, and the Juxtapoz Clubhouse in Miami. Her work has been featured in Vogue Italia, Juxtapoz, Vice, i-D, Paper, and Dazed, among others. Not a Cult published her monograph ICONS, now in its second printing. Her next monograph, Possession, also published by Not a Cult, will be released in December, 2018. Parker Day lives and works in Los Angeles, California.
