Arrington de Dionyso (b. January 4 1975) started making art before he could speak, developing a richly colored universe of personal imagery including dragons, giant cats, dancing crows, and humanoid flower tree hybrid creatures. He's still doing the exact same thing almost half a century later, maybe he's even improved a little in that time. Since moving to Olympia, Washington in 1992, Arrington has developed an international following for his underground experimental music projects as a solo performer and with bands such as Old Time Relijun, Malaikat dan Singa, and This Saxophone Kills Fascists. His paintings have been featured on dozens of album covers and hundreds of concert posters. He was the featured artist in the SS2015 "Psych Rock Collection" by Hedi Slimane for Saint Laurent Paris with his painting "Angels and Dragons in Deep Conversation" embroidered on jackets, backpacks, shoes and swimwear. His book "Molecular Temples: The Sacred Mushroom Paintings" documents work made in isolation during the 2020 pandemic.

Statement
I trained as a painter. Drawing served a practical purpose; it was a skill that supported my work. When I discovered colored pencils, this changed. Realizing I could create overlapping images, I began to draw what felt like an unexplored world. This new creative output consumed me, the drawings grew in ambition. I developed a technique using multiple sources to create multidimensional space within a drawing, thick layering allowed the images to stand on their own while becoming accessories to the other images in the same work. My first suite of drawings, Sea Fashions, contained eleven portraits based on a variety of visual sources–-tintypes, sepia-toned photos, 19th century medical textbooks, cartes de visite. These were accompanied by sea creatures and set against a variety of art historical backdrops: Garden of Earthly Delights, a photo studio backdrop, Disney animation cel. Last year, after being asked to teach a colored pencil class, I conceived of a new series of portraits: queer men, taken from vintage photos and set into dreamlike landscapes. This new series, titled Paradise, represents my desire to create a new visual history, where queerness isn’t aberrant, but a beautiful part of nature.

Alphachanneling’s artwork is a holistic exaltation of sexuality, it is carnal, explicit and provocative, but in the most gentle, graceful and reverential way. The artist’s mythical world of the Utopian Erotic has charmed an international audience through exhibition, publication and a massive and enthusiastic following on Instagram. Pleasure is central to the intention and inspiration driving Alphachanneling’s work. “It is the compass that points me towards what is alive and activating, both in my life and my art making. Pleasure is the overwhelming state of being in harmony, where for a moment, the boundary of what is internal and external dissolves.”
